This year two of Sierra's female welders, Emma Turner and Aurora Parker, participated in the first annual Women in Welding Competition at the Career Technical Education Charter High School. These participants had two hours to build a small metal project from a blueprint with certain rules. Each and every piece was judged very precisely by three AWS (American Welding Society) employees.
Congratulations to both girls that participated! Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter

Sierra’s team consisting of Zach Lloyd, Valerie Philips, Logan King, Mya Woodward and Jade Hild won 2nd overall. Logan King received 1st and Mya Woodward received 4th. Congratulations to the students that worked hard to compete in this contest!
Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter This year Sierra FFA had 5 teams compete in the Opening and Closing competition at Reedley College. The Greenhand team placed 2nd overall with Rylee Osterberg who was awarded Outstanding Secretary and Jade Hild who was awarded Outstanding Reporter. Another team placed 3rd overall, with Ariana Rodrigues winning Outstanding President, McLane Young winning Outstanding Vice President, and Kennedy Turner who won Outstanding Sentinel.
Sierra FFA also brought the first ever junior high team to compete. From the Junior High team Even Lockwood was awarded Outstanding Treasurer. Congratulations to all of the students that competed in the 2022 Opening and Closing competition! Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter On November 4th, Sierra FFA took two teams to a welding contest at Yosemite High School. The goal for the competitors was to build a fire pit in six hours with certain rules and guidelines. It had been about 19 years since Sierra High had participated in any welding competitions. After all of the hard work, measuring, cutting and welding, the teams had high hopes of placing. However, little did Sierra know they would bring home 1st and 4th place. The 4th place team consisted of Russell Judd, Wyatt Gibson, Paige Beard and Nayliah Gibson as the team's assistant. This team won a brand new oxy acetylene torch set. The 1st place team consisted of Jackson and Riley Smith and Skyler Stevens. This team won a brand new miller welder. Though Sierra knew that they did not have the newest or best equipment, all they needed was a little bit of teamwork and ended up coming home with around 1,600 dollars worth of prizes. Our Sierra welders look forward to competing in the upcoming welding contests.
Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter This year on November 5th, Sierra FFA hosted the annual one day woodcut at the High School Farm. Though, this year we did not have as many people as the last, the group managed to reach the desired goal of 10 cords of wood. Sierra gathered 25 students and 8 adults to help split, stack, and deliver the wood. All students that attended received booster support for working, whether it was towards their SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) project, welding materials or their very first FFA jacket. A huge thanks to everyone that donated their time and effort into helping Sierra FFA reach their goal for this woodcut.
Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter Sierra FFA succeeded once again at the annual Big Fresno Fair! This tradition and experience has greatly enhanced our chapter members, through highlighting all of the time and effort that they put into these animals. Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter This year the 2022 annual Sierra FFA two day woodcut was a great success! Fifty Three FFA members attended, as well as multiple parents and Alumni. Though our goal was 20 cords, we ended our woodcut with 35 cords of wood. Unfortunately, because of the rain we were not able to camp in Shaver like we normally do. However, the FFA members found a way to have just as much fun! The students and ag advisors camped out on the football field at the high school. Students and staff bonded over swimming, delicious burgers, and s’mores. A big thanks to Tim Messer for donating the wood, and all the parents and advisors that helped in cutting, stacking, and delivering. - Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter This year, Sierra FFA had the amazing opportunity to host the 2022 annual (chapter officer leadership conference) or COLC. Thanks to our chapter and Sectional President Macy Lloyd, we were able to make this happen. 14 schools attended this conference including Sierra, Liberty, Clovis, Fowler, Parlier, Yosemite, San Joaquin Memorial, Kingsburg, Minarets, Reedley, Reedley Middle College, Immanuel, Sanger, and Selma High School. We also received a wonderful visit by the State FFA Reporter, Melanie Orozco and the State FFA Vice President, Landon Hendricks. During this conference many students had a chance to learn different leadership skills and participate in workshop activities that brightened the officers' understanding of being a leader in the FFA.
Submitted by Aurora Parker, Sierra FFA Reporter On September 28, Sierra FFA hosted the annual Discovery, Greenhand, and Chapter Degree Ceremonies in the Sierra High School Small Gym. The officers opened the meeting with a fun skit called “Dancing through the Decades,” where they choreographed short dance routines to songs from different decades. The chapter was able to reward 18 Discovery Degrees, 19 Greenhand Degrees, and 5 Chapter Degrees at the ceremony. The FFA Creed was presented during the ceremony by Nicholas Telles, Juniper Stewart, and Audrey Willis, Aiden Romero, and Peyton Hare. Thank you to all who helped put the event on, and those who attended. Congratulations to all who have committed hard work to the Sierra FFA Chapter!
Submitted by Macy Lloyd, Sierra FFA Reporter In the midst of a tough year, Tollhouse-Sierra FFA has proven to be “Stationed by Success.” Our chapter motto was chosen carefully this year and our members have worked daily to embody those words. Our year started on Zoom and by October, our small school district was fortunate to be back on campus and in the classrooms. Before we could enjoy a little bit of normality though, our community was faced with the raging Creek Fire, leaving our students evacuated or without homes. In September, our chapter was able to participate in the FFA Creek Fire Service Project and collaborate with multiple chapters across the state of California to collect gift cards and money for local families impacted by the Creek Fire. In March, our chapter partnered with Southern California Edison to plant trees to help rehabilitate the Sierra National Forest and provide them to families rebuilding their homes. Our members were able to get hands-on experience in each step of the tree planting process. We took a short trip to the Edison nursery and were able to get fresh, fertilized soil into the special seed planting boxes. Then, we took the boxes to our school farm, where students from each class period came down to work together to get the seeds planted. We formed sort of an “assembly line,” with students using wooden tools to push down the dirt, place the seed in the compartment, add mulch, and then bring new boxes to start the process over again. It was a wonderful experience that we will get to continue to see grow, and eventually see in the forest which surrounds our community. A staple of the FFA Creed is to “exert an influence in [your] home, and community,” and our chapter was able to host our local preschool for farm tours. This provided an opportunity for agricultural literacy at a young age, and for our chapter members to share about the agricultural industry and learn how to educate others. Some of the presentation topics done by our members included beef, the dairy industry, California commodities, pigs, rabbits, and heavy equipment and machinery. The preschoolers made remarks regarding the fun they had, and this is a tradition that will hopefully continue in our chapter for years to come. In addition to the previous activities, FFA week was a clear highlight of the 2020-2021 school year. This was the best turnout our chapter had seen in a while, with large amounts of volunteers to participate in the unique activities and a crowd filling our high school quad. The notable events included a tricycle race, hay moving contest, the famous tractor pull, and roping contest. Prizes were handed out to the winners consisting of pizza, candy, and cash! The week was exciting for all students at our high school and concluded with a teacher appreciation luncheon, where we quizzed them on FFA knowledge and brought a complimentary coffee truck to show them just how thankful we are for them. These are just a few of the highlights of Tollhouse-Sierra FFA’s year, and in the coming months we look forward to developing new ideas and systems to continue improving our chapter, and educating others on the importance of agriculture in our world. As always, we will strive in “learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, and living to serve!”
-Submitted by Macy Lloyd, Sierra FFA Chapter Reporter The 2021 Sierra FFA Annual Woodcut was quite the success! This was the largest woodcut in 7 years that the chapter has hosted. On August 28-29, the participants made the drive past Road 3 at Shaver Lake and cut 30 cords of wood. Many Sierra FFA members, Alumni, and parents came out to cut, stack, and deliver wood. Members had the opportunity to run chainsaws and operate a wood splitter while earning money toward their Supervised Agricultural Experience or FFA conventions. Our participants were able to camp out at Shaver Lake and sit around the campfire after a long day of work! A special thank you goes out to Mandy McGrath for feeding our hungry helpers every meal of the day, and to Southern California Edison for donating the wood! Sierra FFA is grateful for every person that came to work hard and help, and to everyone who purchased wood to support our program!

Sierra FFA is always encouraging members to participate in public speaking contests. This year our chapter sent a total of 7 members to represent us at the East Fresno Madera Sectional Speaking Contest on February 6th. Macy Lloyd and Abbey Cetin (not pictured) recited the FFA Creed and answered questions about what the Creed means to them and how it applies to their lives outside of FFA. Macy placed first overall out of 39 speakers and is moving on to Regionals. Kiera Heberlein and Micahla Riemath (not pictured) competed in the Job Interview contest where students must complete a letter of introduction, a resume, and a mock interview for a selected agricultural related job. Kiera placed 2nd and is moving on to Regionals. Hannah Thomason (not pictured) and Rebecca Moore (not pictured) participated in Impromptu. In this contest participants are given a topic and have 1 minute to prepare a one to two minute speech in response to the topic. Both of the participants did very well. Colby Perry took part in the Extemporaneous contest. He was given 30 minutes to prepare a 4 to 6 minute speech about the topic given. After giving his speech he is asked questions by the judges.
