Natural Resources- The first competition of the year, Natural Resources, tests student on their ability to identify native plants and animals, their knowledge of California geographical and historical facts, and their ability to present a short team speak about a designated topic. In addition to their understanding of facts contestants must demonstrate their practical abilities in areas such as GPS use, reading topographical maps, dendochronology (the study of tree rings), and mule packing.
Coached by: Mr. Wyman Creed: A freshmen only competition, this CDE requires students to memorize and interact with one of the FFA's most important historical documents, the FFA Creed. In addition to memorization, student must also answer three questions relating to their understanding of the meaning of the creed. Coached by: Mr. Wyman Parliamentary Procedure: This debate style competition test members on their knowledge of Robert's Rules of Order and their ability to think on their feet and present rational persuasive arguments. A parli-pro team is made up of a chairman, secretary/debater, and four debaters. Novice Coach: Bob Actis Advanced Coach: Mr. Vandenack Impromptu: This sophomore only competition tests students ability to think clearly under pressure. Student are given a topic (a word, quote, or question) then given 30 seconds to formulate a short 30-90 second speech. Students are judged on the cohesiveness and content of their presentation. Coached by: Mr. Wyman Extemporaneous: Extemporaneous public speaking is a research heavy contest that requires students to write a 4-6 minute speech on a random topic, but they're only given 30 minutes to compose their speech. Student must prepare resources (books or binders) that contain enough information for them to write a persuasive and education speech on a wide variety or agricultural topic. Coached by: Mr. Vandenack Prepared: This competition allows students to dig in to a single agricultural topic that they're passionate about. Members must write and submit an 8-10 minute speech on a topic beforehand. The judges are given time to consider the topic before they listen to the speech and ask 5 minutes of questions. Coached by: Mr. Vandenack Job Interview: In this competition, students participate in a mock job interview for an agricultural related job. They must submit a resume and cover letter before hand, and are asked questions by a panel of possible employers that range anywhere from teamwork skills to job qualifications. Coached by: Ms. Hammon Best Informed Greenhand: Another all freshmen CDE, this competition test students on their knowledge of the entire FFA organization from its foundation in 1928 until present day. Students are tested in a variety of styles including fill in the blank, true/false, and multiple choice. Coached by: Ms. Hammon Livestock Evaluation: This is one of the most popular and competitive FFA competitions. Students are asked to judge and rank classes of beef, sheep, goats, and swine then defend their reasons for placement. In addition, members must take a knowledge test that demonstrates their understanding of the livestock industry. This competition not only teaches a vast amount of practical knowledge but also develops public speaking and study skills.
