On March 18th, the Sierra FFA Livestock Judging Teams travelled to Merced College. The “A” team did well for their second competition, winning 1st place out of 50+ teams competing. The team also got 1st in the Sheep subcategory, 2nd in the Swine subcategory, 3rd in the Beef subcategory, 2nd in the Goats subcategory, and 2nd in the Reasons subcategory. Individually, Taylor Collins was the 6th high individual, won 2nd in the Reasons subcategory, and 3rd in the Beef subcategory. Macy Myers won 5th in the Goats subcategory. Lastly, Austin Dudley- Nelson won overall high individual out of about 240 competing, and 5th in the Swine subcategory. The “A” Team was made up of Austin Dudley- Nelson, Shane Wyman, Taylor Collins, and Mason Tarr. The “B” Team was made up of Macy Myers, Keilani Mendenhall, and Hayden Tarr. The team competes again on March 25th at Modesto.

On March 17th, six Sierra FFA members travelled to College of the Sequoias in Visalia to compete in the Regional Speaking finals. Hayden Tarr and Colby Perry competed in the FFA Creed Recitation competition and didn’t qualify for State. Derek Maxwell moved on to Regionals for the Prepared Public Speaking Competition, although he did well, he didn’t qualify for State. For Extemporaneous Speaking, Macy Myers and Seth Chrisman competed, and Macy qualified to compete at the State level by winning 4th place. Lastly, Kennedy Newton competed for the Job Interview competition, made it to the finals round, and qualified for State by winning 3rd place. Sierra FFA wishes the two individuals luck for the State Competition in April at Valdez Hall.
On March 15th, Sierra FFA hosted the East and West Fresno-Madera Sectional contest for Parliamentary Procedure. The contest consisted of a test on everything parliamentary procedure, and two preliminary rounds. For West Fresno- Madera, Chowchilla FFA’s Novice and Advanced teams swept the competition and will be moving on to the regional level. For East Fresno- Madera, Minarets Novice team won second and Sierra FFA’s novice team won first place and all six high chairs. The Sierra Novice Team was comprised of : Sharon Winn, Kiera Heberlein, Madeline Wait, Jayden Baker, Makenna Boul, Colby Perry, and Baylee Drew. For advanced, the team from Minarets placed second with 2 outstanding chair awards. Sierra FFA “A” Team placed first, and had 3 outstanding chair awards. The advanced “B” team placed third with 1 high chair; they will not be advancing to regionals. The advanced team “A” was comprised of Macy Myers, Kathleen Marsh, Taylor Collins, Derek Maxwell, Kennedy Newton, and Shane Wyman. The “B” team was made up of: Emma Actis, Cody Heirendt, Keilani Mendenhall, Seth Chrisman, Jordan Coburn, Kelsey Mehling, Cody Hall, and Ian Hamilton. The teams will all advance to the regional competition on March 31st, at College of the Sequoias Tulare.
On the 4th, Sierra FFA’s Livestock Judging team, coached By Brad Wyman, made their debut for the season. The team was comprised of: Shane Wyman, Taylor Collins, Austin Dudley- Nelson, and Mason Tarr; and alternates: Macy Myers, Keilani Mendenhall, and Seth Chrisman. The team ended up placing 5th overall, also winning 2nd in the beef subcategory and 5th in sheep and goats. Mason Tarr was recognized as the 6th high individual; he also got 2nd in the beef subcategory, 5th in swine, and 8th in sheep and goats.
On March 3rd and 4th, 27 Sierra FFA members travelled to UC Davis to compete in two different competitions. On the 3rd, two advanced and one novice parli pro team competed in three preliminary and one finals round. The novice team made it to finals, and ended up placing third. Both advanced teams made it to the finals as well. The “A” team placed 5th, and the “B” team won first place.
