The Natural Resources team went to its first contest Saturday, December 1st at Mariposa High School. Sierra FFA's group consisted of Nate Killian, Kiera Heberlein, James Lujano, Carli Turner , Nathan Wilson-Degraff and advisor Brad Wyman. The contest includes packing a mule with a diamond hitch, identifying fifty plants and fifty animals, a knowledge test from the book National Audubon Society Field Guide to California, an oral presentation and a skills task. The oral presentation this year tests students’ proficiency in wildlife management practices. In this practice contest, the skills task included knowing indicator species of life zones, determining what animal belonged to given tracks, reading a topographic map and practicing dendrochronology, the examination a tree’s ring growth to gain information about its life. The team was awarded 3rd overall and 1st in packing. The students will continue to work hard and expand their expertise. Congratulations to everyone who competed and thank you Mariposa FFA for hosting the competition.
