From Left to Right: Makenna Boul, James Lujano, Nate Killian, and Carli Turner On December 7th, the Natural Resources team competed in their first contest at Mariposa High School. Sierra FFA’s group consisted of Makenna Boul, James Lujano, Nate Killian, and Carli Turner along with advisor Brad Wyman. The contest includes packing a mule with a box hitch, identifying fifty plants and fifty animals that are native to California, a knowledge test from the book National Audubon Society Field Guide to California, an oral presentation, and a skills task. The oral presentation this year tests students’ proficiency in range management practices. In this practice contest, the skills task included knowing indicator species of life zones, determining what animal belonged to given tracks, reading a topographic map and practicing dendrochronology, the examination a tree’s ring growth to gain information about its life. The team was awarded 3rd overall, 2nd in oral presentation, and 1st in packing. Congratulations to everyone who competed and a special thank you to Mariposa FFA for hosting the competition. -Submitted by Makenna Boul, Sierra FFA Reporter
